I am a professional futurist who combines academic and consultancy work with a creative multi-media practice.
I completed my Ph.D. research at the University of Westminster in 02001, with a thesis on ‘Visions of the Future on. Television, A Content Analysis and Production Study of Representations of the Future on British Television in the Mid- Nineties.' During my doctoral studies I taught ‘Methods for Social Sciences’ at the University of Westminster and the City University. For participatory observation, I worked as a desk researcher for the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World.
My collaboration with visual artist Bram Goots goes by the name Agence Future (AF). Together we run an interview-based, long-term independent research project to explore individual and organisational images of the futures. Entering its second decade, AF is being expanded and re-shaped for a new project entiteled ReelFutures. While adding several new ingredients to the mix, we continue collecting, studying, creating and sharing images of the futures.
I am a member of the World Futures Studies Federation, the interdisciplinary visual arts collective OST, the POLI research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and until October 02010 president of the UNESCO Centrum Vlaanderen.
My consulting work focuses on foresight in the fields of science, technology and culture, on cross-cultural communication and global equity. Since setting up in 2007 I have worked for amongst others: the King Baudouin Foundation, the Institute Science and Technology, European Parliamentary Technology Assessment,EC DG Information Society & Media, the Museum of Conemporary Art of Antwerp, CultuurNet, Prospekta.
With a project based practice I nurture a collection of images of the futures. Recent projects include Iris Futures at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (with the support of the Institut d'encouragement de la Recherche Scientifique et de l'Innovation de Bruxelles) and O58 (for MAS|Erfgoedcel Antwerpen). In January 02010, with production house FilmNatie I finished Toekomst(EN)-Avenir(S), a documentary about futures thinking in Belgium for the six part To be or not to .be series of the Radio Television Belge Francophone and the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds.
